Tech/Social night

Tech/Social night

Our next Tech/Social meeting is at the Redlands Coast Museum on Monday 20th October, 7:00PM for 7:30PM start. Members and visitors (non members) are always welcomed.

We’re thrilled to welcome new member David VK4DEV to take the platform at this BDARS meeting. Dave will be presenting an engaging talk on the Meshtastic® System and the organisation of the local mesh network which employs LoRa chirp RF technology.

Dave is a long-time contributor and early adopter within the Meshtastic and Brisbane communities, he brings a wealth of experience and insight to the topic.

Some of the topics to be covered:-
  • A quick recap on LoRa, following on from John’s (VK4JBE) talk from the last session – focusing more specifically on Meshtastic’s implementation
  • How Meshtastic uses LoRa modulation to operate as a text-based digital mode over both the ISM and UHF bands.
  • A look at the Meshtastic mesh network across Brisbane and South-east Queensland (as well as interstate and internationally)
  • Expansion in all directions – Sunshine coast, Gold Coast, NSW, Toowoomb
  • A showcase of community projects and builds from across Brisbane
  • Some use cases – how people around Brisbane and surrounds are actually using the mesh network
  • Promoting amateur radio through the mesh – Meshtastic as a gateway to getting licensed
  • How to get started with Meshtastic

In addition to the presentation, there will be nodes and components on display, as well as a live demo setup. If you haven’t tried Meshtastic yet, you’ll have a chance to do so! If you’ve made a start, but want a hand getting set up, David will have a workstation set up for flashing and configuring and troubleshooting nodes!

Whether you join us in person or tune in via the live stream, you’re sure to come away informed and inspired.

Also on the agenda is a quick update on recent club activities, time for a coffee and a chat with your colleagues, and of course any ‘show-and-tells’ that you bring along to introduce to the group – your latest technology acquisitions or home brew projects to amaze the other members!.

Technight/Social meetings are always a good catch-up opportunity to:-

  • Enlist help for anything you need from the other members.
  • Confirm shared arrangements for the upcoming contests, hamfests and meetings.
