Maker Group meet

inside the clubhouse with bob presenting

Thank you, the ten or so members that came down to the clubhouse on Wednesday afternoon (5th Feb) to learn and refresh their knowledge about using the Raspberry Pi single board computer for our future maker projects.

The session was run by Bob VK4YA assisted by John VK4JBE; it was a familiarisation of the Raspberry Pi models, an introduction to Linux operating system, and a tiny bit about the programming language Python and its bundled IDE ‘Thonny‘.

The afternoon was quite warm but we had cold drinks in the fridge. During a break Michael VK4MVC ventured to make a coffee using the Nespresso machine. The coffee aroma was just what was needed to wake us all up ! (Just kidding ?)

From the feedback so far, the objective of the afternoon – for everyone to become more comfortable with the concepts, was met. When we start programming in Python and using the RPi’s GPIO we should now have an understanding about the hardware and software platforms working away inside our future RPi projects.

The next sessions which are all orchestrated by John VK4JBE, will start to focus upon learning Python – but with a very practical approach so we can make our Pi’s switch relays, light LEDs and reading inputs. The idea is to make learning the Python language a bit of fun and also to be able to realise some quick results using it.

The presentation slides are available on the BDARS Discord server for members that couldn’t make it. If there is enough interest, there will be no problem repeating the session at an alternate date. Let us know!
