BDARS BBQ Bonanza – A Sizzling Success (With Extra Thanks to Martin & Eddie!)

This past Sunday, your friendly local amateur radio colleagues and friends at BDARS fired up the grill (and our fundraising spirit) for a classic Bunnings BBQ at Capalaba. The snags were hot, the onions were flying, and the smell of sizzling sausages could’ve probably been picked up on HF if you tuned in just right!

Thanks to the support of our wonderful community and a steady stream of hungry Bunnings shoppers, the day was a fundraising success – helping us keep the club’s gear humming, our repeaters live, and our events running for another period.

But – and there’s always a “but”, isn’t there? – we’ve got to give a massive shoutout to our BBQ heroes: Martin and Eddie. These two legends worked all three shifts on the tongs, the till, and the clean-up – simply because we were stretched to have quite enough volunteers to cover the day. We’re pretty sure they went home smelling like a mix of onion and dedication… and possibly haven’t looked at a sausage the same way since. 🙃🌭

Let’s be real – fundraising events like these are vital to the survival and growth of not-for-profit clubs like ours. They are vital to help pay for everything from MT Cotton electricity to equipment upgrades and even insurance. Without them, we’d be talking on empty frequencies (and nobody wants that).

So here’s the friendly reminder: Next time, if you’re physically able and can spare a few hours for one shift of the BBQ (which we normally hold just 3 times a year), please be ready to raise your hand and join a new BBQ crew. It’s fun, it’s social, and it’s a small way to make a big difference. Plus, where else do you get to combine sausage turning and ham radio talk in one shift? For those members that are unable to attend but still wish to show a contribution toward your club, you could always consider a small donation toward raising the fundraising totals of the day.

Thanks again to everyone who came, helped, ate, or waved on their way past. Also, special thanks to Noel and Shirley who came and rolled their sleeves to assist with our numbers. And if you see them or Martin or Eddie around the club, maybe offer to buy them lunch (just not another sausage).

We nearly forget to mention Darryl, who kindly came and kept us all company!
