Tech/Social night

Tech/Social night

Our next Tech/Social meeting at the Redland Museum is on Monday 16th February, Meeting Time 7:00PM for 7:30PM start. Members and visitors (non members) are always welcomed.

The highlight of the evening will part one of a presentation by member Phil VK4PG on the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM). Phil brings a wealth of real-world experience, having previously served as a director of a national power company.

With the challenges of global warming, rising energy demand, and the transition away from traditional generation sources, these issues are firmly in the spotlight. Whether your interest is technical, regulatory, or political, this presentation promises valuable insights into one of Australia’s most important and evolving systems:-

  • A massive system in transition – in 2000, about 80% of energy in NEM was from coal, today about 45% – and declining
  • The “duck curve” of daily energy demand.
  • The role of subsidies in renewable adoption
  • Why producing power for a negative selling price is rational

There will also be the usual update on recent club activities, time for a coffee and a chat with your colleagues, and of course any ‘show-and-tells’ that you bring along to introduce to the group – your latest technology acquisitions or home brew projects to amaze the other members!.

At the meeting, its also a good opportunity to:-

  • Enlist help for anything you need from the other members.
  • Confirm shared travel arrangements for visiting the upcoming contests, hamfests and other meetings.

As part of the club’s push to revisit and rediscover the technical side of the hobby, we’re inviting members to get involved. If there’s a topic you’d like to share with the group—now or at a future meeting—just let our President, Martin, know.
